Partner Update — Friends of North Point: Winter Speaker Series

The Friends of North Point (FONP) concluded their winter speaker series, featuring three speakers in 2023 focusing on native plants and plant management. The first speaker, Jason Granberg from the Wisconsin DNR, discussed the identification and control of invasive species, emphasizing the importance of early detection. Dr. Warren Porter from UW-Madison addressed the effects of pesticide use on human reproductive health and development, highlighting the potential risks associated with common pesticides. The final speaker, Randy Powers from Prairie Future Seed Company, discussed sustainable practices for creating native landscapes on properties, showcasing the benefits of native plant gardens.

Beach Cleanups provide an opportunity to enjoy these special places along the shores of Lake Michigan while also giving back by cleaning up the litter that accumulates on the beaches. You can help by registering to volunteer at a beach near you during the events on May 8th from 9-11am or by signing up to do your own individual cleanup at any beach, on any day!

Collaborative North Point Bluff Restoration Project Work Continues

Although slowed by the collective response to COVID-19, the critical restoration work at North Point Bluff Park in the City of Sheboygan continues. Lakeshore Natural Resources Partnership (LNRP) has been collaborating with the City of Sheboygan, Friends of North Point, Sheboygan River Basin Partnership, and Stantec Consulting Services on the project.

The Friends of North Point (FONP) were formed in June of 2017. A group of local citizens in Sheboygan contacted LNRP to discuss the loss of habitat and impact of invasive plants and shrubs on the unique and vital area called North Point Bluff. With the help of the City of Sheboygan, FONP have officially “adopted” the North Point Park, which includes the bluff, and serve as stewards of this special piece of the Lake Michigan shoreline…
