Beach Cleanups provide an opportunity to enjoy these special places along the shores of Lake Michigan while also giving back by cleaning up the litter that accumulates on the beaches.  You can help by registering to volunteer at a beach near you during the events on May 8th from 9-11am or by signing up to do your own individual cleanup at any beach, on any day!

In fall of 2020, despite the challenges of the pandemic and with safety protocols in place, 105 volunteers came together to collect 260.5 pounds of garbage from Sheboygan and Manitowoc beaches.  A more typical year includes cleanups in spring and fall, and in 2019 a total of 361 volunteers collected 1,212.2 pounds of garbage.  Our local watershed partners, the Sheboygan River Basin Partnership and Friends of the Manitowoc River Watershed lead these cleanups along with strong community support and partnerships.

Other partner groups, Friends of the Twin Rivers Watershed and Friends of Crescent Beach also lead local cleanups, and if we include their data, it brings the 2019 total to an astounding 505 volunteers who removed over 1,504.2 pounds of trash from beaches along the shoreline from Sheboygan to Kewaunee county.  If you think that’s impressive, it’s also worth noting that these cleanups are a part of a major Midwest effort organized by the Alliance of the Great Lakes, which brings together 13,000 volunteers from the Great Lakes region to collect tens of thousands of pounds of litter each year through its Adopt-a-Beach program.

With your help, we can make an even greater impact this spring, preventing this trash from harming wildlife and water quality.  Pre-registration is required; please visit https://adopt.greatlakes.org/s/find-a-cleanup to sign up for an event near you.

To hold your own DIY (do it yourself) Beach Cleanup at any beach on any day: Visit adopt.greatlakes.org/s/host-a-cleanup to sign up to become a Team Leader and register your own private event.
