Coastal Resiliency: EAB Mitigation and Coastal Infiltration with Trees
LNRP has continued to strategically plan for the restoration of coastal ecosystems with support from the US Forest Service and the Wildlife Conservation Society Climate Adaptation Fund.
LNRP has captured the effort by using drone video to showcase the work and create a tool for long-term management. The Forest Service and Climate Adaptation Fund grants are designed to mitigate the impacts of emerald ash borer and create climate resilient coastal habitats. Project sites include coastal wetlands and forests, cold-water trout streams, riverine habitats, bluff lands, and Lake Michigan shoreline. Each project site is a publicly held property with a group of engaged stakeholders including a local unit of government, funding agencies, and an LNRP partner group.
Our stakeholders have had access to an online course, virtual workshops, and management materials provided by the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science (NIACS), a unit of the US Department of Agriculture’s Northern Forest Climate Hub. All of these materials are designed to create a climate adaptation framework built to manage these properties long-term for both enhanced habitat quality and improved water quality.
Each video includes:
Location Map
Climate adaptation message
Coastal infiltration with habitat enhancements and water quality improvements
Recognition of our partners, funders, stakeholders (get logos)
The first set of videos were completed in 2020 and were given to stakeholders for each project site for their inputs on the narrative. Our plan is to return after the projects are complete with some additional inputs and outcomes. We plan to add a testimonial insert from LNRP and local land steward as we move into the implementation phase of the project.
Project Sites:
Amsterdam Dunes Preservation Area, a collection of habitats on the coast of Lake Michigan
Centerville Creek / Hika Park, located in Cleveland with additional streambank stabilization planned for 2021
Fischer Creek Park, another collection of habitats along the coast of Lake Michigan
Lower Schuette Park on the Manitowoc River
Willow Creek Preserve, a cold-water trout stream and tributary of the Sheboygan River
Videos that will be completed in late 2020 and early 2021 include:
Olson Park on the Ahnapee River
Point Creek Park along the shore of Lake Michigan
