Winter Virtual Event-Green Bay Conservation Partners

PROJECT SUMMARIES

Wetlands, wild rice, and waterfowl: Restoring wild rice in Green Bay coastal marshes

Brian Glenzinski, Ducks Unlimited; and Amy Carrozzino-Lyon, UW-Green Bay

A collaborative partnership between Ducks Unlimited, UW-Green Bay, US Fish & Wildlife Service, WI Department of Natural Resources, and UW-Madison Division of Extension is working to reestablish native wild rice at priority wetlands on the Green Bay west shore. Conservation professionals and students most recently seeded wild rice in late October 2020 and will continue monitoring efforts to inform future management.

Silver Creek Stream Restoration

Jim Snitgen, Oneida Nation

Restoring the hydrology and enhancing instream habitat in a ditched, tiled and channelized stream. Lowered peak flows, extended base flows, flood attenuation, water quality and habitat enhancement are the goals.

Fourth Generation Woman Landowner Restores Land Back to Wildlife Habitat

Patti Schevers, Landowner; Julie Hager; and

Julie Peterson, Pheasants Forever/NRCS

Patti Schevers works with NRCS and USDA programs to take land out of corn and soybean rotation and put in place permanent wildlife habitat. Her goal is to not only restore the land to benefit wildlife but also to provide a place for her family and others to learn and connect with the earth.

Working Lands for Clean Water

Adam Abel, NRCS; and Jeremy Freund, Outagamie County Land Conservation Department

This project features bringing animals back to the landscape to restore vulnerable acres that have contributed sediment and nutrients to the Fox River and bay of Green Bay. This project serves as a template to what is possible in protecting streambank erosion by using rotational grazing and the partnerships that make these efforts possible.

Celebrate National Public Lands Day

Karina Gonzalez, Cream City Conservation Corps; Laurel Hauser, Crossroads at Big Creek; Dan Collins, Landscapes of Place; and Nancy Aten, Landscapes of Place

We are in the first stages of an ecological restoration project at Crossroads at Big Creek’s Cove Preserve within the city limits of Sturgeon Bay. This fall, with the help of the community and project partners, we celebrated National Public Lands Day by completing our first big planting.
